The rain began as a few small taps on the lighthouse roof. The keeper paused beside the window, holding a blanket she had just taken from the shelf. Its corners were folded together, soft as the pages of a well-read book.

She laid it over the chair and opened one fold, then another. A little warmth remained in the wool from the afternoon sun. Along one edge ran a line of uneven stitches, made long ago with blue thread.

Outside, the path darkened gently. Rain gathered in the shallow bowls of the stones. The sea and the sky became almost the same color, with only the lighthouse beam moving slowly between them.

The keeper brought her chair closer to the window. She placed a cushion behind her back and rested her feet on a low wooden stool. There was nothing special about the stool. It had simply been there for years, waiting in the right place.

She listened to the roof. Some drops landed lightly. Others slid together and fell from the gutter with a soft, round sound. Between them, the room held its own quiet: the clock, the kettle cooling, the wood settling beneath the floor.

She drew the blanket across her knees. Her hands rested on the blue stitches. For a while, she followed them without counting.

Later, she turned down the small lamp. The rain continued without needing her attention. The chair could keep its place by the window. The light above could keep turning. Wrapped in familiar wool, she let her eyes close, and left the evening just as it was.
