The complete story

At the end of the narrow path, a small lighthouse stood beside the sea. Its door was painted the color of an old blue cup. A smooth stone held it open while the evening air moved slowly through the room.

Inside, a kettle rested on the stove. Someone had folded a wool blanket over the back of a chair. The window faced the water, where the last silver of the day lay in long, quiet ribbons.

The keeper filled a cup and carried it upstairs. Each wooden step made a familiar sound. There was no reason to climb quickly. The light would turn at its own pace, as it always did.

At the top, she set the cup beside the window. A little moth settled on the outside of the glass. Far below, the tide reached the stones and slipped away again. It sounded like a page being turned by a careful hand.

She drew the blanket around her shoulders. The tea smelled faintly of warm grain. Across the bay, one window glowed, then another. She imagined cups on tables, slippers beside beds, a book closed with a ribbon between its pages.

The lighthouse beam moved over the water. It did not ask anything of the night. It simply made a small circle of light, then came around once more.

By the time her cup was empty, the room had grown soft at the edges. She left the light to its slow work and went downstairs. Outside, the sea kept breathing. Inside, the blanket waited, and everything could rest.
